The dog did not move even after Bar\u0131\u015f took his hand away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Warmth still remained in Bar\u0131\u015f\u2019s fingertips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sensation of the white fur he had touched moments before had settled faintly beneath his skin. It was different from the coldness of stone. Different from the dryness of old paper. Different from the roughness of the soil that had remained on the soles of the shoes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was the warmth of something alive.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Deep inside Derinkuyu Underground City, everything remained as quiet as before. The low ceiling, the narrow passage, the carved walls. The voices of tourists should have been audible somewhere in the distance, but those voices were absorbed by layer after layer of stone, and by the time they reached this place, they had lost their meaning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The light was weak, softly illuminating the dog\u2019s white fur.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f slowly drew back his hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog did not run away.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n

Normally, it should have stiffened at least a little. After being touched, it should have moved away from the human hand. It should have become cautious, moved its nose, shifted its paws, or at least looked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this dog did nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply looked at Bar\u0131\u015f.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That stillness became a different kind of unease inside him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was it not afraid?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

\n

Or did it have no reason to be afraid?<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

There was a small space beside the underground wall. It was too narrow to be called a room, but slightly too wide to be called a passage. Perhaps it had once been carved out as a place to put something. There was a shallow hollow in the wall, and a thin layer of dry sand had collected near the bottom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog was sitting near that hollow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

More precisely, rather than having sat down, it looked as though it had been placed there from the beginning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f looked at the wall behind the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Three short scratches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The narrow hollow beneath them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And to the right of it was a small line he had not noticed before.<\/p>\n\n\n

Once a fragment had been remembered, it returned even when he saw it in another form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Without realizing it, Bar\u0131\u015f almost reached toward his pocket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fragment was still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A small, dry object.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that might be a trace of his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that might be a meaningless stone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Something that seemed to be both, and yet neither.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog did not answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply did not move.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

That silence was different from the silences he had known until yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His mother Emine\u2019s silence was a silence that protected something.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deniz\u2019s silence was a silence that swallowed anger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His father\u2019s silence was the silence of someone who would never return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But this dog\u2019s silence was different.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not for running away, hiding, or refusing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet, Bar\u0131\u015f felt as though he had received an answer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He immediately pushed the thought away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ever since finding his father\u2019s map, he had only been seeing connections everywhere. The wind, the sounds, the dog, the scratches on the wall. Everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He tried to believe that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the thought did not last long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Because the dog was standing in a place far too precise to be accidental.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near something that appeared to be a trace of his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In front of the three scratches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beside the small line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The sound of his soles pressing into the sand echoed softly through the small underground chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When he crouched near the wall, the coldness of the stone reached the area around his knees. The light was weak, and the outlines of the scratches appeared and disappeared. He might understand them if he touched them with his fingers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Bar\u0131\u015f did not touch them immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had only just touched the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now he would touch the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warmth of the dog and the cold trace of his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For some reason, he hesitated to touch both with the same hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, the lack of an answer did not frustrate him as much as it once had.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Simply because the dog was there, he felt he could endure the unanswered space a little longer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not reassurance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was too soon to call it salvation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it resembled, just a little, the feeling of not being alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f gently touched the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The stone was cold.<\/p>\n\n\n

It was not guiding him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not urging him forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was simply beside the things Bar\u0131\u015f might otherwise overlook.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was what made the dog so mysterious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After a while, the dog slowly lowered its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was not going to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It had not lowered its guard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It simply seemed to have returned to a posture of waiting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f took his hand away from the wall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The coldness remained in his fingertips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The warmth from touching the dog had not completely disappeared.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The two sensations were mingling within the same hand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Footsteps sounded again somewhere underground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This time, they were a little closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They might belong to tourists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They might belong to a guide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even so, the dog did not look back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It looked only at Bar\u0131\u015f.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was as though it were waiting not for the sounds outside, but only for what Bar\u0131\u015f would choose next.<\/p>\n\n\n
