The edge of a white sheet caught the light, bright enough to sting the eyes. There was hardly any wind, and yet the cloth moved as though it alone knew the sky.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emine looked at him with a clothespin between her lips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat is it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her voice was quiet, as always.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cMom.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The word came out straighter than he expected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of man was Dad?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Emine\u2019s hand stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only that small movement\u2014taking the clothespin from her mouth and holding it between her fingers\u2014remained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bar\u0131\u015f waited through the silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before, that silence alone might have been enough to make him step back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere was a map. There were the shoes. There\u2019s a name. But the one thing that matters is still missing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The words came out on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No\u2014<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>not on their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They came the way something long shut inside finally finds a crack to break through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cWhat kind of man was he? His work, where he was going, what he was thinking\u2014how can all of that be left behind without anything to explain it?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The last line came out sharper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe he was angry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That thought came to him only then.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his father.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At himself, for being told nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He couldn\u2019t tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a while, Emine looked into the empty laundry basket.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then she set one clothespin down on the railing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI know it doesn\u2019t make sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Bar\u0131\u015f held his breath for a moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He had expected her to deny it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or else brush it aside again in that same quiet way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But she didn\u2019t deny the contradiction itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBut\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emine kept her eyes on the sky beyond the white cloth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThere are parts of a person that remain in a form you can explain. And parts that don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThat doesn\u2019t tell me anything.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cNo. It doesn\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Her answer was strangely calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too calm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It made something in him tighten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re saying it\u2019s fine to leave it like that?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>His voice shook this time, plainly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m his son. How can I not even know what kind of man he was?\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Only then did Emine look at him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There were no tears in her eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No anger either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Only something she had been carrying for a long time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou want to know him through one word.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201c\u2026No.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He denied it at once.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But not fully.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A job would do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A title.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Any one word that could hold the center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man who kept maps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man who listened to the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A man who wore the same shoes for years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of that felt enough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emine reached out and smoothed a crease from the cloth hanging over the railing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYour father was not someone who could be explained by one thing.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The way she said it was close to what she had once said before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not someone you could put simply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But this time it came a little nearer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bar\u0131\u015f said nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Emine went on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cHe was serious. Quiet. He looked far away. When he was home, he was here properly.
