He had tried, in his mind, to forget the place where that shadow had disappeared yesterday.
And still, his feet would not move away from it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had not meant to return to the same place.
Bar\u0131\u015f thought that as he climbed the slope again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The place where he had seen the distant dog-like shadow yesterday.
The dry grassy slope overlooking the valley.
The place where G\u00f6reme spread low beneath him, and the rocky paths crossed one another below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was no reason to come.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No\u2014
he could make reasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To see the view.
To breathe the morning air.
Because yesterday still bothered him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But none of them felt like the real reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His feet had remembered before he did.<\/p>\n\n\n

The morning light was a little whiter than yesterday.
The rocks were dry, and thin shadows still lay at the bottom of the valley.

For a moment, something in his chest loosened.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe it had been his imagination after all.
Maybe yesterday\u2019s shadow had only come from tired eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That would have been easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But the relief did not last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On a rock a little distance away, there was something neither black nor brown.
Almost the same place as yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n

Yesterday it had been at the edge of the valley.
In the end, it had disappeared beyond the rocks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And yet this morning, it was here again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The word came to him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But it was weaker than yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f took one step closer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The dog-like shadow did not move.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another step.
Still nothing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distance was wide.
And yet it did not feel as far as yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was strange.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not because he had moved closer.
His body was still far enough away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But somehow, it felt more on this side than before.
As if not the space,
but the distance inside him,
had narrowed a little.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He almost spoke.
Then didn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He was not close enough to speak to a dog.
And he still didn\u2019t know if it was a dog at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then the shadow slowly raised its head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He couldn\u2019t see its face.
He couldn\u2019t see its eyes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But Bar\u0131\u015f knew it had noticed him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The same gaze as yesterday.
No\u2014
quieter than yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Not to frighten him.
Not to call him.
Only to let him know it was there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f noticed his hand touching the map in his pocket.
Again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whenever something happened, his hand went there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His father\u2019s map.
The nameless mark.
The line with no destination written on it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maybe the map was not pointing toward a destination.
Maybe it was pointing toward a place to return to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thought crossed his chest for only a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A place to return to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The words brought his mother\u2019s face with them.
The house in Ankara.
A closed door.
His mother swallowing her words.
Deniz, not angry\u2014
wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He had set out on a journey.
But maybe he had run away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And maybe this dog-like shadow was not leading him forward.
Maybe it was showing him what he had to return to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f shook his head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Too much thinking.
That was what he told himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But each time he did,
something in this land took one more shape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From below the slope, tourists\u2019 voices rose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two young travelers came up with a camera.
They passed beside Bar\u0131\u015f and pointed their lens toward the same valley.<\/p>\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f looked toward the dog\u2019s shadow without meaning to.
Still there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The travelers had to be looking near it.
Their camera was facing the same direction.
And yet, they did not react.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Could they not see it?
Or did they see it and simply not care?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thought sat uneasily in him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was so clear.
At least to him,
clear enough that he could not look away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One of the travelers pressed the shutter.
The dry click mixed with the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that moment, the dog-like shadow stood.
Only Bar\u0131\u015f noticed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shadow moved slowly toward the cover of the rocks.
Not hurried.
Not fleeing.
Still, it seemed to avoid being seen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f drew in a small breath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The travelers were still taking pictures of the view.
No one looked toward the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f took one step forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The shadow stopped once, just as it had yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Whether it looked back or not, he could not tell.
But to Bar\u0131\u015f, it seemed that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then, in the next moment, it disappeared beyond the rocks.
In the same place as yesterday.
In the same way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The only difference was that Bar\u0131\u015f could no longer call it coincidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stood there for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The travelers\u2019 laughter came from somewhere far away.
The town was moving as usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the guesthouses, breakfast plates were being set out.
Someone was drinking tea.
Someone was taking a photograph.
Someone was lost in the streets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Inside that ordinary time,
only Bar\u0131\u015f seemed to be standing inside another clock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond the rock where the dog\u2019s shadow had vanished, a narrow path continued.
The same path as yesterday.
The path descending toward the distant valley.<\/p>\n\n\n

He was not unable to follow now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before following,
there were things he had to be sure of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Why the same place?
Why was he the only one who noticed?
Why did that shadow never change its distance?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

No answers.
But the questions were clearer than yesterday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f slowly began to descend the slope.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halfway down, he looked back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was nothing on the rock now.
Only the grass remained flattened
where the dog\u2019s shadow had been sitting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Against the wind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Bar\u0131\u015f stopped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The wind blew.
The other grass moved.
But that one place did not move for a while.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As if some weight
