the smell of tea, the sound of people.
The other went deeper between the fairy chimneys.
Toward the place where dusk had settled,
where only the thin sound of wind moved through.

Barış stood before the fork.

The dog-like shadow had disappeared into that path moments ago.

His body still remembered too much to call it a mistake.
The soil giving way beneath his foot.
The ache in his chest when he held his breath.
And that quiet certainty
when the shadow vanished beyond the rocks.

Maybe it had not disappeared.
Maybe it had been left behind.

The thought was still inside him.

Göreme grew cold quickly in the evening.
The rocks that had held the day’s heat now returned a slow chill.
Dry grass rubbed together on the slope, and far off, tourists’ voices drifted back toward the lights of town.

Barış looked at the road back.

If he went that way, nothing would happen.
He could return to the guesthouse, eat dinner, lie down, and blame the day on tiredness.
By morning, maybe things would feel a little normal again.

It wasn’t a bad choice.
It was reasonable.

And still, he could not look away from the other road.

The narrow path between the fairy chimneys looked less like a road than a crack in the rocks.
The walls on both sides were high, and the farther it went, the less light remained.
Small stones lay underfoot.
If stepped on, they would make that dry sound.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" little.

More than something being there,
the thought of nothing being there frightened him.

Seeing something no one else believed.
Then losing the ability to believe it himself.

That fear was close to the fear around his father.

His father’s absence was a fact.
But what his father had thought, what he had left behind, where he had been going—
none of that was clear.

When years pass around an empty place, people begin to turn the emptiness against themselves.

If only I had again.

Was this meant to take him somewhere?
Or bring him back
to the place he had avoided?

Wind passed.

From the path between the rocks came the smell of dry earth.
For a moment, it reminded him of the cold at the cave entrance.

Barış placed one foot toward the darker path.

That was when a voice came inward.

No one was there.
No dog.
No shadow.
Only the road.

That was the most frightening part.

If something could be seen, it could become a nothing.
And still, he had to decide whether to go.

Barış understood that.

This was not about following a dog.
It was about whether he could take one step
toward what he did not understand.

From the road back to town came the sound of dishes touching.
Someone laughed.
The lights of the guesthouses lay softly across the rock wall.

There, an ordinary night waited.
Ahead, nothing was certain.

Barış stood without moving for a while.

The sky darkened little by little.
The shadows of the fairy chimneys thickened, blurring the shape of the path.

If he was going to follow, it had to be now.

That thought came.
But another came with it.

Not yet.

If he forced it, something might break.

That dog-like presence disappeared when approached.
The more he rushed,
the farther the distance became.

Barış closed his eyes.
He listened to the wind.
To the distant town.
To his own breath.

Then he opened them.

He did not go deeper.
But he did not return to town either.

He simply stayed at the center of the fork.

That was not doing nothing.
It was not running away.

For the first time, he chose to wait
for something inside himself.

Then, from the darkness of the inner path,
a small sound came.

One stone rolling.

Barış lifted his face.

No shadow.
No dog.
Only, farther down the path,
one blade of grass moved where the wind should not have reached.

And in that moment, Barış understood.

Maybe because he had not chased it,
it had not disappeared.

Beyond the darkness,
something
