Episode 36 — A Shift in the Senses | The Mystery Deepens in Zelve’s Broken Cave

Barış following a dog through a cave passage toward the light in Zelve, Cappadocia

The sound seemed to arrive a moment too late.

Barış stood in the narrow passage of a collapsed cave in Zelve. The voices of tourists he had heard just moments ago were gone now, faded into distance. Only the wind remained, slipping through hollowed rock, leaving behind a thin, worn sound.

The dog was ahead.

Standing still in the darkness.

It wasn’t far. Not close enough to reach, but close enough that a short run should have closed the gap.

That’s how it looked.

But the moment he took a step, that sense of distance broke.

Close, but far.

Far, but still meeting his eyes.

Barış stopped.

He placed a hand on the stone wall. The cold reached his fingers a second too late, as if even his body was slightly out of sync with this place.

Some memories remain where words cannot reach.

“…what is this place?”

His voice disappeared into the passage.

No echo came back.

Or rather—after a delay, something low returned.

It sounded like his voice.

But not entirely his.

The dog didn’t move.

It stood there, as if waiting for him to notice.

The walls carried old marks. Carved by hands. Shaped into rooms and narrow paths. Once, someone had slept here. Cooked here. Lived with others.

Now, nothing remained.

And yet, in places like this, absence held its own weight.

Barış thought of the line on the floor from yesterday.

The one that reminded him of his father’s notebook.

He had told himself it meant nothing.

If that were true, why did it stay with him?

The dog took a step forward.

There was no sound.

He saw the movement.

But heard nothing.

Barış held his breath.

There should have been something. A claw against stone. Sand shifting. Anything.

But nothing came.

Instead, after a slight delay, he heard a pebble fall somewhere else.

Behind him.

Ahead.

Above.

He couldn’t tell.

Barış turned.

No one.

The path descended into silence.

The path back was still there. A faint trace of light from outside. He could leave if he wanted.

But he didn’t move.

It wasn’t fear.

If it were only fear, he could have turned back.

What held him there was something else.

He needed to know.

Leaving without understanding had become harder than staying.

The dog moved again.

This time, there was sound.

A short, dry step on stone.

But the sound came before the movement.

A cold line ran down his back.

The order was wrong.

Sound first.

Then motion.

Memory first.

Then the event.

Maybe it had always been like this.

With his father.

He didn’t know him.

And yet, he had always known his absence.

The result came first.

The reason came after.

Barış closed his eyes.

Just for a few seconds.

The darkness behind his eyelids grew thicker.

When he opened them again, the dog was closer.

Had it moved?

Or had he?

He couldn’t tell.

He looked down at his feet.

They hadn’t shifted.

And still, the distance had changed.

“Stop.”

The words slipped out.

The dog didn’t move.

Its eyes held nothing.

No blame.

No call.

Just presence.

Barış leaned against the wall.

His breathing had grown shallow.

There were no words for what was happening here.

Distance.

Sound.

Time.

Memory.

Each one slightly out of place.

And strangely, it didn’t feel limited to this place.

It had always been there.

Inside him.

When he thought of his father.

When he remembered his mother’s silence.

When he couldn’t face Deniz’s anger.

He had always been late.

To understand.

To feel.

To notice.

The dog slowly turned its head.

Ahead, the passage opened toward a broken exit. Light entered at an angle. Dust hung in the air, drifting slowly.

Barış looked at the light.

He could leave.

But even if he did, this feeling would not stay behind.

The dog stopped just before the exit.

At the edge of light, something familiar was waiting.

Then, for the first time, it looked at him directly.

And in that moment, something became clear.

This wasn’t the first time he had seen it.

The dog in Love Valley.

The one here in Zelve.

The distant shape in Göreme.

He couldn’t prove they were the same.

But something inside him had already decided.

Maybe they were.

The thought formed quietly.

As it did, the dog’s shadow stretched long in the light.

It wasn’t just a shadow.

It looked like a marker.

Something left behind.

Pointing deeper into the broken path ahead.

Barış took a step forward.

This time, he heard his own footstep immediately.

That alone gave him a small sense of relief.

But it didn’t last.

The dog stood in the light at the exit.

And the way it stood—

something settled in his chest.

The same dog.

He wasn’t ready to accept it.

But denial alone wasn’t enough anymore.
