Episode 47 — Meeting Its Eyes in Derinkuyu

Barış faces Noah in a silent underground passage beneath Derinkuyu.

Even before their eyes met, Barış knew he was being watched.

He stood motionless, staring into the dark passage ahead.

The dog that had certainly been there in the wider space was gone now.

But it had not disappeared.
It had gone deeper.
Not running.
Waiting.

Somehow, he knew the difference.

The air in Derinkuyu had grown colder.

The passage was low, the walls close to his shoulders.

With each breath, the smell of stone, damp earth, and old soot settled into his chest.

The voices of tourists no longer reached him.

Here, the human world peeled away, layer by layer.

Barış touched the fragment in his pocket.

Small.
Dry.
Worthless, by the look of it.

And yet, when he had held it near the hollow in the stone door, it had not felt unrelated.

His father’s trace.
The marks underground.
And that dog.

All of them had gathered in the same darkness.

Barış took one step forward.

His shoe sounded louder than he expected.

The sound moved down the passage, then thinned beyond the bend.

He still could not see the dog.

But it was there.

His body knew before his eyes did.

The passage bent slightly to the right.

Part of the wall was blackened, and the low ceiling was rounded in places, as if many shoulders had brushed it over time.

Someone had passed through here long ago.
Bent low.
Quiet.
Hidden from the world above.

Had his father walked here too?

The thought brought a small pain to his chest.

His father had not been at home.

But that did not mean he had been nowhere.

He had been somewhere.
Seen something.
Chosen something.

That possibility hurt.

The father he had never known was growing.

The father he thought he knew was moving farther away.

From the passage ahead, a faint sound came.

Not claws on stone.
Smaller.
A breath, almost weightless.

Barış stopped.

Low in the darkness, there was a shape.

The dog was there.

Closer than before.

But not too close.

As if it had chosen the distance itself.

Barış swallowed.

“…Why don’t you run?”

After saying it, he no longer knew what he was asking.

Barış and Noah share their first silent gaze inside Derinkuyu Underground City.
No words are spoken. One quiet glance begins to change their journey.

The dog?
His father?
Himself?

The dog did not answer.

It only lifted its face.

Then—
their eyes met.

Every unnecessary sound left Barış’s body.

His breathing, the cold under his feet, the pressure of the walls—
all of it moved farther away.

The dog’s eyes were not sharp.

Not gentle either.

Not the kind of eyes that comfort a person.

Only deep.

Eyes that seemed to have seen a long time pass.

Eyes without words, yet knowing something.

Barış could not look away.

His father’s face did not appear there.

The past did not show itself.

Still, something opened inside his chest.

Fear.
Yes.

But not the fear of being attacked.

The fear of being seen.

The hesitation he had hidden.

The wish to know his father.

The wish not to know.

The part of him that wanted to blame his mother.

The part that wanted to run from Deniz’s anger.

All of it seemed visible.

Barış almost lowered his eyes.

Barış quietly reflects inside Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia.
Sometimes the longest journey begins with a single quiet thought.

Then the dog tilted its head, just a little.

Not accusing.

Not rushing him.

Only waiting.

Something inside Barış shifted quietly.

He had not known being waited for could hurt this much.

Being ordered would have been easier.

Being given an answer would have been simpler.

But the dog said nothing.

It did not force the road on him.

It only stayed there, waiting for Barış to choose.

That was the hardest thing to escape.

Barış closed his hand around the fragment in his pocket.

Had his father been waited for by someone too?

Or had he been waiting for someone?

Barış holds a small stone while Noah waits quietly in the distance inside Derinkuyu Underground City.
Sometimes a single stone carries more than words ever could.

No answer.

But looking into the dog’s eyes, his father’s absence no longer seemed like empty space.

It was a space where something had been left.

A space waiting to reach someone.

Barış breathed in.

“Are you telling me to go?”

The dog did not move.

But it did not look away.

Not an answer.

Not a signal.

Still, Barış understood something.

It was not telling him to go.

It was asking whether he would.

The darkness ahead seemed to deepen.

Beyond the passage, an even narrower way continued.

If he went there, he might move closer to his father.

And touch something he could not return from.

Barış did not close his eyes.

This time, he did not look away.

Keeping his eyes on the dog, he moved one foot forward, just a little.

It was not enough to call approaching.

Only enough not to run.

Still, at that small movement, the dog’s ear shifted quietly.

As if that was enough.

Inside Barış, fear changed shape again.

Something else entered it.

Not curiosity.

Not expectation.

Something quieter.

Close to wanting to trust.

The dog slowly turned its body toward the passage ahead.

But it did not go completely.

It showed its side, half-looking back.

Barış saw it then.

It was waiting.

It had been waiting before.

It was waiting now.

This dog would not leave him behind.

But it would not pull him either.

Whether to move forward remained with him.

Barış let out a small breath.

“Okay.”

He had said the same word before.

But this time was different.

It did not mean he understood.

It meant he understood that he had to go on
without understanding.

The dog’s eyes caught a faint light in the dark.

Then it was gone.

But something of it stayed in Barış.

The dog stepped once, soundlessly, into the passage.

This time, Barış did not stop.

He did not touch it.

He did not call it.

It still had no name.

And yet, the two shadows
had begun to face the same direction.

Deep in the dark passage, the dog looked back once more.

This time, its eyes were not a question.

They seemed to say—

Now it is your step.

Barış follows Noah through a quiet tunnel in Derinkuyu Underground City.
Sometimes trust is simply taking the next step together.
