Episode 50 — Reaching Out in Derinkuyu

Barış reaches toward Noah inside the ancient chamber of Derinkuyu Underground City.

Before he reached out, Barış noticed his fingers were trembling.

The dog had not run.

Since that moment, something in the underground air had changed.

No.
Maybe it wasn’t the air.
Maybe it was him.

The space near the deepest part of Derinkuyu was narrow, yet somehow felt deep.

The stone walls were cold.
The ceiling was low.

Old soot marked the walls, and the sand beneath his feet was quiet, as if it had swallowed every trace of people.

The dog stood before the far wall.

The place with the three short marks.
Beneath them, a faint hollow.

Barış closed his hand around the fragment in his pocket.

He had come this far.
And still, he knew nothing.

Had his father been here?
What were these marks?
Why did this dog never run?

There was not one answer.

And yet, he had already chosen more than once to keep moving without one.

The dog watched him.

Not too close.
Not too far.

As if leaving Barış the distance he needed to choose for himself.

Barış took one step closer.

The dog did not move.

Another step.

The stone floor gave a small sound.

The dog’s ear moved slightly.

Still, it did not run.

Barış held his breath.

If he reached out, he could touch it.

That fact tightened something deep in his chest.

Did he want to touch it?
To make sure?
Or was he afraid something would change the moment he did?

He didn’t know.

His hand was already rising.

In the thin underground light, the dog’s fur looked dark and muted.

But near its neck, the fur moved quietly with each breath.

Alive.

That simple truth unsettled him.

This was not a vision.
Not a memory.
Not only meaning.

Before him was a living body with warmth.

His fingertips stopped just before the dog.

So close.
And still, so far.

Barış reaches toward Noah inside Derinkuyu Underground City in Cappadocia.
Sometimes the smallest distance is the hardest to cross.

It felt like reaching toward his father.
Toward his father’s silence.
Toward something no one in his family had ever been able to name.

Barış held his breath in his throat.

The frightening thing was not the dog.

He had thought that again and again.

What frightened him was that after touching it,
he might no longer be able to return.

The dog did not run.
It did not bark.
It did not come closer.

It only waited.

That waiting hurt.

If someone had ordered him, he could resist.
If someone had pushed him, he could run.

But when something waited,
he had to choose.

Barış slowly began to lower his hand.

Not yet.

Then the dog lowered its head, just a little.

It did not move closer.
It did not lean into him.

It only brought itself to the height of Barış’s hand.

Something inside Barış quietly gave way.

It was not forgiveness.
Not comfort.

Only the fact that he had not been refused.

Barış quietly reaches toward Noah as the dog gently lowers its head inside Derinkuyu Underground City.
No words were needed. The silence was enough.

Barış raised his hand again.

His fingers pressed through the air.

The cold of the underground stayed on his skin.

Just before touching the dog’s fur, he almost closed his eyes.

He didn’t.

He had to see.

What he was choosing.

His fingertips touched the dog’s coat.

Only for a moment.

Warmer than he expected.

Barış gently touches Noah's fur for the first time inside Derinkuyu Underground City.
Warmth quietly replaced fear.

The tension left his body.

The dog did not move.
Did not run.
Did not bark.

It simply stayed there.

The feeling of short fur remained on Barış’s fingers.

Not rough stone.
Not cold.

Soft.

A quiet warmth.

Down here, that warmth felt more real than anything else.

Barış pulled his hand back at once.

He did not have the courage to touch it longer.

But he had touched it.

That could not be undone.

He let out a small breath.

Only then did he notice he had been holding it.

The dog did not narrow its eyes or wag its tail.

It only looked at him in silence.

Not an ordinary reaction.

And yet, Barış was no longer afraid of that.

Some things can be touched
before they are understood.

That was what came to him.

Then his father rose in his chest.

Had his father reached toward something he did not understand too?

Had he gone forward not because he knew,
but because he did not?

If so—

Barış stopped the thought there.

He had not understood his father.
Had not forgiven him.

Only, for the first time, his father’s choice looked a little more human.

The dog slowly turned toward the wall.

The three marks.
The small hollow.
The stone like a sealed door.

Barış took the fragment from his pocket.

His hand still trembled.

But it was not the same trembling.

Not only fear.

The tremble of someone trying to know.

The dog sat before the wall.

For the first time.

Until now, it had always stood.
Waited.
Kept its distance.

Now it sat there,
as if there was no longer any need to run,
or guide.

Barış brought the fragment near the hollow.

It did not fit perfectly.

But one corner touched the edge of the hollow.

A faint sound.

Stone meeting an old piece.

Barış holds an ancient fragment near a carved stone wall inside Derinkuyu Underground City as Noah quietly watches.
Not every answer is meant to fit at once.

In that moment, something became clear inside him.

This place was not the answer.

It was an entrance.

Not the answer to his father.
Not the answer to Noah.

An entrance where he himself would begin to face things.

The dog did not move.

Barış pulled the fragment back and looked at it again.

Still no name.
Still no meaning he could hold.

Still, nothing had ended.

But it was no longer only a presence.

Barış spoke softly.

“…I wasn’t afraid.”

He didn’t know who he was speaking to.

The dog.
Himself.
Or his father, somewhere far away.

The underground air gave no answer.

But the silence felt a little softer than before.

The dog stood.

Then moved past Barış, quietly, toward the space beyond.

The warmth he had touched still remained on his fingers.

Barış could not move.

The dog walked a few steps and stopped.

It did not look back.

Still, Barış understood.

This time, it was not waiting.

Not testing.

Only trusting
that Barış would follow.

Barış watches Noah walk deeper into Derinkuyu Underground City without looking back.
Some journeys begin when no one looks back.
