Episode 49 — The Presence That Does Not Run in Derinkuyu

Barış and Noah face each other in the quiet tunnels of Derinkuyu Underground City.

The things that do not run can make a person unable to move.

Barış stood before the stone wall, thinking that.

At the foot of the stairs.
On the dark landing.

The dog was beside the wall where the three short marks remained.

He had come one step closer.
Only a few steps.

And yet, after those steps, the air underground was no longer the same.

Deep inside Derinkuyu, time from the surface had been cut away.

The stone stairs were low.
The walls were cold.

A thin layer of sand lay underfoot.

When he breathed in, the smell of earth, stone, and old soot stayed in his chest.

No tourist voices.
No guide.
No footsteps.
No laughter.

Here, there was only the dog, Barış, and the old marks.

The dog did not move.

It stood before the three scratches, its nose close to the stone.

An ordinary dog would react if someone came this near.
Grow wary.
Run.
Bark.
Or come toward him.

But this dog did none of those things.

It did not run.
It did not come too close.
It asked for nothing.

It stayed silent, as if saying,
Stay here.

Barış held the fragment in his pocket.

The small piece that seemed to almost fit the hollow in the stone.

Coincidence, or part of something—
he still didn’t know.

But the more things he did not know, the farther his father’s outline seemed to move.

No.
Not farther.
Closer, from places Barış had never known.

That frightened him.

His father had been absence.

A man not in the house.
A man cut short inside his mother’s words.
A man who had lost shape inside Deniz’s anger.

But here, before this underground wall, his father was no longer only absence.

A man who had left something.
A man who had stayed silent.
And maybe—
a man who had tried to lead someone here.

Barış shook his head at once.

Too soon.

He could not decide what it meant.

And yet, the dog did not run.

That fact would not let the thought stop.

Barış took one step toward the wall.

At the same time, the distance to the dog closed.

The dog did not move.

Barış held his breath.

He was the one moving closer.
Not the dog.

He was moving closer.

That small fact settled heavily inside him.

No one was pushing him.
No one had ordered him.

And still, he could not leave.

If he wanted to run, he could.

He only had to go back up the stairs.
Return to the surface.
Step into the morning light and join the line of tourists.

But even if he returned, the dog’s eyes would not disappear.
The three marks would not disappear.
His father’s silence would not disappear.

Barış understood.

He could run.

But he would have to take the self that ran back with him.

That was what frightened him most.

The dog lifted its face slightly.

Their eyes met.

It was not like before, not a gaze that pierced his chest.

Quieter.
Waiting.

Barış spoke softly.

„Why don’t you run?“

His voice sank into the stone.

The dog did not answer.

Because it did not answer, the question remained.

Barış quietly faces Noah inside Derinkuyu Underground City while holding a small stone fragment.
In the silence beneath Derinkuyu, no words were needed.

Barış crouched.

Not close enough to touch the dog.
Still far.
But lower now, closer to the height of its eyes.

The dog did not move.

That calm unsettled him even more.

It wasn’t afraid.
Not of him.
Not of this place.
Not of the darkness, or the underground silence.

As if this underground city was not unknown to it.

Barış looked at the marks on the wall.

Three short lines.

The ones he had found below the stairs.
The mark from the earlier wall.
The writing that looked similar.

None of them were the same.

But they were close.

And things that are close do not let people go.

Barış took the fragment from his pocket.

In the dim light, it looked like a small shadow.

Its roughness stayed on his fingertips.

The dog’s ear moved slightly.

Barış did not miss it.

„This?“

He had not meant to ask.

But it became a voice.

The dog looked at the fragment.
Then at the wall.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

The dog was not looking at him.

It was looking at the fragment and the wall.

It was not leading him.

At least, it was too early to decide that.

But it would not let him look away from this place.

That much was certain.

Barış brought the fragment closer to the wall.

He did not mean to insert it.

Only to bring it near.

Then the dog moved sideways for the first time.

Not to run.
Not to come closer.
To make space.

Barış faces Noah beside three ancient marks in Derinkuyu Underground City.
Neither of them moved. The silence made the choice.

Barış’s chest gave a quiet jump.

As if it had told him to stand there.

He rose slowly and moved toward the place where the dog had been.

The dog stepped back only half a step, staying close.

Close.
Closer than ever.

If he reached out, he might touch it.

The moment he thought that, his body stiffened.

Did he want to touch it?
To make sure?
Or was he afraid of touching it?

He didn’t know.

The dog did not run.

That fact placed the choice before him.

Maybe the dog was not the one running.

Maybe he was.

Barış looked at the dog, the fragment tight in his hand.

In the dark, the dog’s fur had lost its color.

But the fur at its neck moved slightly.

Breathing.
Alive.
Not a vision.
Not memory.
Not only meaning.

There was warmth in it.

For some reason, that made his chest ache.

Barış slowly lowered his hand.

Not yet.
Not now.

But he would not run either.

The dog watched him.

And for a moment, its eyes seemed to narrow slightly.

Not a smile.
Not relief.

Only as if it had decided to keep waiting.

Barış turned back to the wall.

Three marks.
A faint hollow beneath them.

The edge of the fragment.

He brought it close again.

This time, his hand did not shake.

A small gap remained between stone and fragment.

It did not fit perfectly.

But it was not unrelated.

A stone fragment held near ancient marks inside Derinkuyu Underground City while Noah waits in the background.

Some pieces do not fit perfectly, yet they still belong together.

Barış drew in a breath.

At that moment, the dog exhaled softly beside him.

The sound was almost too quiet.

And yet, underground, it seemed to echo like someone saying,

It’s all right.

Barış did not close his eyes.

He pulled the fragment back and put it into his pocket.

Not an answer yet.
Too soon.

But he would not deny it anymore.

The dog had not run.
Neither had he.

That alone made it feel as though something had begun.

After a while, the dog slowly turned its face toward the deeper space ahead.

Narrower.
Darker.

The place where the air seemed heaviest in the underground city.

The dog took one step, then stopped.

This time, it did not look back.

Noah walks into a dark passage in Derinkuyu Underground City as Barış quietly follows behind.
Noah never looked back. The next step belonged to Barış.

Barış understood.

It no longer needed to check.

Whether he came or not was his choice.

The dog would not run.

And because of that,

Barış could no longer search for a reason to run.
