Episode 23 — The Narrow Stone Alleys of Göreme | Footsteps Where No One Should Be!

Barış walking through a quiet alley in Cappadocia at sunset

Before he knew it, he had turned toward the opening where tourists had been going in and out.
It was supposed to be just a cave.

And yet—

The mark on his father’s map crossed his mind.
In that moment, the darkness began to mean something else.

Barış standing beside a dark cave entrance in Göreme
Some paths seem ordinary until they begin to look back.

That moment was still somewhere in his body.

Footsteps become heavier after they disappear.

Even after Barış left the entrance of the cave dwelling, he couldn’t turn back for a while.
That dry sound from inside.
A step on stone.
Then another.

Had someone been there?
Or was it only the wind moving through the rock?

He tried to think that way.
But the shape of the sound stayed deep in his ears.

When he returned to Göreme’s narrow lanes, the morning light had grown stronger.
Light bounced off white walls.
Dry earth lay thinly in the gaps between the stones.
From the main street, he could hear tourists.
Laughter.
Camera shutters.
The clink of a tea glass against its saucer.

But one street in, the sounds thinned at once.
The road was narrow.
On both sides, carved rock walls and old stone houses continued in silence.
Dry grass had caught on the small iron bars of a window.
In front of a low door, an old chair had been left behind.
There were signs of people living here.

But no one was there now.
That emptiness unsettled him.

Old wooden chair beside a stone house in a quiet Göreme alley
Someone had been here. The silence remained.

In his pocket was his father’s map.
Each time the corner of the paper touched his finger, he remembered why he had come here.

No.

There was still no real reason.
Only fragments that had not yet become one.
His father’s mark.
The cave entrance.
The footsteps from within.
And the unseen presence he had been sensing since yesterday.

They were not answers.
But they no longer felt unrelated.

Barış stopped halfway down the lane.
A sound came from behind him.
A small sound.
Dry stone underfoot.

He turned.

No one.
Only morning light falling at an angle into the back of the lane.
A low wall’s shadow.
A thin cloth moving beyond the corner.
Nothing else.

Barış breathed in slowly.
Just his imagination.
He tried to say it.
But the words were weak in his mouth.

Until yesterday, that might have been enough.
In Ankara, he could have blamed the wind.
Inside the house, he could have called it old wood creaking.
But here, the sound was too clear.

He began walking again.
One step.
Right after it—
another step behind him.

Barış stopped.
The sound behind him stopped too.
Something cold moved across his back.

Not fear, exactly.
Smaller than that.
But his body seemed to know before he did.

Something was there.

Barış standing in a quiet Göreme alley near faint paw prints
Some footprints appear before their owner arrives.

The moment the thought came, Barış pushed it away.

No.

He hadn’t seen anything.
No shadow.
No dog.
No one.
Only a sound.
But that only no longer felt light.

An older woman appeared from the end of the lane.
She carried a small shopping bag, and a thin scarf was wrapped around her head.
When she saw Barış, her eyes narrowed slightly.

“Are you lost?”

Her voice was gentle.

An elderly woman speaking with Barış in a quiet Göreme alley
Sometimes a stranger leaves behind the words you cannot forget.

“No… just walking.”

The woman nodded and glanced behind him.
Only for a second.
But it looked as if she were checking something.

“Sounds come back around here.”

“Come back?”

“There are many rocks. Footsteps, voices. Even when you think no one is there, sometimes you hear them a little late.”

It was a practical explanation.
Barış was a little relieved.
He should have been.

But then the woman added quietly,

“Though not everything is an echo.”

After saying that, she walked down the slope as if nothing had happened.
Barış watched her go.

Not everything is an echo.

Only those words stayed in the lane.

The wind moved.
Low and thin along the rock wall.
A little dust lifted and trembled in the light.

Barış looked behind him again.
No one.

Still, something seemed to be watching him.
Not eyes.
Not yet.
Just the sense that somewhere in the air, something knew he was there.

It was different from the wind he had felt in Ankara.
Here, the presence was lower.
Closer to the ground.
As if it were following quietly from his feet.

Barış walked to the corner of the lane.
Once he turned, he would come out onto a more open road.
Voices would return.
The colors of the souvenir shops would show again.
He could go back to ordinary Göreme.
He knew that.

And still, his feet stopped.

Just before the corner, near the base of the wall, there was a small mark.
It looked almost like a dog’s paw print.
But only half of it remained in the dry earth.
Not clear.

Barış crouched.
He almost touched it with his finger.
Then stopped.
It looked as if it might vanish if he touched it.

Barış examining faint tracks in a quiet Göreme alley
A mark in the dust is sometimes enough to change a journey.

The print seemed to have come from deeper in the lane.
Or to be heading there.
He couldn’t tell.
Only its direction seemed to overlap with the path he had taken.

Another sound came.
This time from ahead.
Barış lifted his face.
Beyond the corner.
At the edge of the light.

Something seemed to be there.
A low shadow.
Neither black nor brown.
For one brief moment, it moved along the wall.

“…”

No voice came out.
By the time Barış stood, it was gone.

Only the trace remained—
as if someone had been watching him
from the other side of the narrow road.

Should he follow?

The thought came.
But his feet didn’t move.

If he followed, he might learn something.
But learning it frightened him.

Göreme’s morning continued normally, only steps away.
The smell of bread.
Tourists’ voices.
A tray carrying tea glasses.
Someone laughing.

Beside that ordinary morning,
Barış seemed to be the only one stepping onto another road.

He stood slowly.
The footprint was still there.
But once the light grew stronger, it would disappear.
Before it vanished, he had to remember what he had seen.

The moment he thought that,
footsteps came again behind him.
One step.

Barış did not turn around.
If he turned, there might be nothing again.
And if there was nothing,
he might no longer be able to trust this strange feeling.
So he stayed facing forward.

Then it came closer—
not a footstep this time.
Something quieter.
A gaze.
Low and still.
The kind of gaze you can sense
before you can see it.

Barış looked beyond the corner.
No one was there.

And yet, from the place where no one should have been,
something was certainly watching him.
