Episode 40 — What Is That Dog? | Certainty Takes Shape on Zelve’s Ridge

Barış watching Noah on a rocky ridge at sunset in Cappadocia
Rocky valley path in Cappadocia under a dramatic sky
A quiet path disappearing into the Cappadocian landscape.

Dusk carried the color of something that hides answers.

Barış stood on a ridge above Zelve. After passing through the narrow passage, he had ended up here without noticing how. The steps between felt thin, almost gone.

Behind him, the broken caves lay in shadow.

Ahead, the sky of Cappadocia sank into red.

And on a rock a short distance away, the dog was there.

It didn’t run.
It didn’t come closer.
It simply remained.

That alone had stopped being ordinary.

Wind moved across the ridge. Dry grass whispered low. Shadows stretched along the stone. Voices from far-off tourists dissolved into the evening light before reaching this height.

Barış kept his eyes on the dog.

The distant shape in Göreme.
The distance that never changed in Love Valley.
The misaligned sense in the passage.
The eyes that met his in the square.

They returned now as one line, settling quietly inside him.

Not a coincidence.

But still without a name.

He had come this far without knowing what it was.

The dog lifted its head.

Its eyes stayed dark in the sunset. Not sharp. Not kind. Just still.

Barış drew a breath.

“You…”

His voice caught.

Nothing followed.

The dog said nothing.

Of course.

But the silence was no longer empty.

A silence he had known before.

The kind that stayed after his father was gone.

The kind his mother never filled.

The kind Deniz covered with anger.

All of it gathered here, carried on the evening wind.

Barış took one step forward.

The dog didn’t move.

Another.

Still no movement.

He could get closer.

That thought rose, then tightened in his chest.

If he did, something would have to be admitted.

That this dog was not just a dog.

That this journey was no longer about tracing his father’s steps.

That he would not return to who he had been.

He stopped.

The sun dropped behind the dog, leaving only its outline, dark against the light.

Not beautiful.

Unsettling.

Still, he couldn’t look away.

The dog walked to the edge of the ridge.

Beyond it, the valley stretched out—paths threading through stone, collapsed caves, shadows laid thin across the ground.

The dog looked down.

Barış followed its gaze.

A white dog looking over a Cappadocia valley at sunset
The valley stretched far beyond what could be seen.

He couldn’t tell what lay there.

Yet something in his chest shifted.

Underground.

The word came without reason.

The sense of an entrance in Göreme.
The line on the floor in Zelve.
The mark in his father’s old notebook.

All of it pointed downward.

He tried to shake the thought away.

It stayed.

The dog turned back.

Its eyes met his, straight on.

As if asking.

No—

as if the question was already inside him.

What is that dog?

A man and a white dog facing each other at sunset in Cappadocia
Neither spoke, yet both understood.

For the first time, the shape of it settled clearly.

He didn’t say it aloud.

He couldn’t.

If he did, something would begin for real.

The dog lowered itself onto the rock.

Quietly.

Not chasing.

Not escaping.

Waiting.

As if it would remain there until he stopped turning away from the question.

His hand trembled, just slightly.

Fear was still there.

But something else had entered it.

A need to know.

About his father.
About the dog.
About why he had come here.

Not all at once.

But no longer something he could ignore.

Barış looked up at the fading sky.

When he left Ankara, he thought he was searching for his father.

Now it was different.

To know his father had begun to mean knowing himself.

And at every entrance to that, the dog had been there.

The dog stood.

It stepped away from the edge and turned toward another path.

Not the one back to Göreme.

A path leading farther.

Downward.

Toward something deeper.

He hadn’t known that path before.

Still, he understood.

Next comes below.

Not outside.

Not above.

Deeper.

The dog walked a few steps, then stopped.

It looked back.

In the dimming light, only its eyes remained clear.

Barış didn’t move.

But he was no longer only trying to escape.

The question kept echoing inside him.

What is that dog?
Why does it appear before me?
Does it have anything to do with my father?

No answer came.

Only the wind.

The dog’s shadow stretched long, almost reaching his feet.

A man watching a distant dog at sunset in Cappadocia
The distance remained, but the shadow reached him.

And in that moment, a thought surfaced.

If he followed that shadow, he would not return.

Still—

he didn’t want to lose it.

The dog began to walk.

This time, it didn’t wait.

Barış stayed on the ridge, watching its back.

Before the sun fully sank, the dog slipped into the shadow of the rocks.

What remained was wind, the red sky,

and a question that refused to fade.

What is that dog?

And the question was no longer meant for the dog alone.
